Help the Peninsula SPCA Raise the Woof!

(Peninsula SPCA)

NEWPORT NEWS — The Peninsula Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) will continue to honor the late Betty White with its annual fundraiser starting Jan. 2 and running until Jan. 17 — Betty White’s birthday.

White, who passed at the age of 99 on Dec. 31, 2021, was a well-known actress and animal activist, and this year, the Betty White fundraiser will take on a new focus, “Raising the Woof!”

After a recent inspection of its facility, the Peninsula SPCA (PSPCA) has found it needs funds to replace a portion of its roof. The section of the roof that needs to be replaced spans from the cat room down to the lobby and is important to the health and safety of the animals, as well as the overall operation of the shelter, it said.

PSPCA estimates the entire project will cost $75,000, and the Betty White fundraiser will be the first of many to help raise the capital for the project.

To kick off the campaign, long-time patron and friend to the animals and the Peninsula SPCA, Cathy McQuade, has pledged a match of $20,000 for any donations received during the Betty White fundraiser, PSPCA said. All donations raised Jan. 2-17 will be matched dollar-for-dollar, up to a total of $20,000, doubling donations made by the community.

“Our aging facility requires many repairs throughout the year, but this project is above and
beyond what we anticipated,” said Megan Steele, executive director. “We are so grateful to
Cathy McQuade for stepping up with her $20,000 challenge to the community to help raise the ‘woof.’ These donations will help us reach our goal sooner and ensure that our kitties and pups literally have a roof over their heads.”

Donations to Raise the Woof can be made on the Peninsula SPCA’s website or checks made payable to Peninsula SPCA can be mailed to:
