JAMES CITY COUNTY — A local man has died after a single-vehicle crash Monday on Forge Road in James City County.

According to officials, the James City County Police and Fire Departments responded to the single-vehicle accident on Forge Road between Lakeview Drive and Little Creek Dam Road intersections at 4:30 p.m. on Nov. 20.

Emergency personnel discovered a black 2023 Honda Accord had veered off the westbound lanes of Forge Road into an embankment before overturning. The driver, 64-year-old Walter Barry III of James City County, was found unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene by James City County Medics.

According to police, initial findings indicate speeding may have contributed to the crash. It’s believed that Barry was not wearing a seatbelt, police said, and the possibility of alcohol or a medical emergency playing a factor is undetermined and will be investigated.

Due to the accident, both lanes of Forge Road were closed around 4:35 p.m. and reopened at 7:30 p.m.

The accident remains under investigation.
