Ferris’ Day Off: Helping Your Pet Adjust to Daylight Saving Time

(Stephanie Sabin/WYDaily)

HISTORIC TRIANGLE — It is time to “fall back” and while you may relish the extra hour of slumber, there is a good possibility your dog may not let you.

While our pets do not have the same sense of time, their bodies do use the rise and set of the sun to help control rhythm and patterns according to the American Kennel Club. And, if your dog is anything like Ferris … they also use their stomachs.

Along with adjusting your schedule, pet owners will need to help their animals adjust in order to help them reduce stress and anxiety.

Make sure you ease into changes, it may not seem like a lot to a human but, one hour can make a difference in your pet’s routine. Feeding, potty, walks, playtime and sleep are all part of Ferris’ daily life and you can bet if any of those things are off, he will act out accordingly.

In the fall, the daylight hours are shortened. Consider adding a glow collar and using reflective gear for both you and your pet to increase safety when out in the evenings. If the darker hours limit outside play and walk time, your pet may need added indoor activity and exercise.

The transition can be difficult for some pets, while others may pick up on the new schedule right away. It is important to have some grace and patience while your canine adjusts.
