Williamsburg Woman Dies After Loose Tire Strikes Vehicle on I-64 in York County

(Virginia State Police)

YORK COUNTY — A Williamsburg woman died Sunday afternoon after a loose tire struck her vehicle on Interstate 64.

Virginia State Police (VSP) said the fatal accident occurred at approximately 12:22 p.m. on Interstate 64 eastbound at mile marker 241 in York County.

VSP said its preliminary investigation revealed that the driver of a 2017 Jeep Renegade was traveling westbound on Interstate 64 when one of its tires became dislodged. The tire traveled into the eastbound lanes striking the driver side of a 2005 Ford Explorer driven by 53-year-old Tammy M. Parsons of the 100 block of Canterbury Lane, Williamsburg.

Parsons suffered serious life-threatening injuries and died at the scene, police said. Parsons was traveling with her husband and five children, all whom escaped without injury.

VDOT briefly detoured traffic at the Camp Perry exit to help alleviate traffic at the scene.

Neither alcohol nor speed are considered contributing factors to the accident. The investigation is ongoing and charges are pending, VSP said.

A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to support the family.
