City of Williamsburg Announces New Director of Public Works & Utilities

Jack Reed (City of Williamsburg)

WILLIAMSBURG —Williamsburg City Manager Andrew O. Trivette announced the hire of Jack Reed on Friday as Director of Public Works and Utilities.

Reed, the current Director of Public Works and Utilities for the Town of Smithfield, was chosen after a nationwide recruitment and selection process.

Reed takes on the role effective Oct. 16. He succeeds Dan Clayton, who retired in July after 48.5 years with the city.

“I am excited to welcome Jack to the Williamsburg team,” Trivette said. “His strong background in Public Works and Utilities operations and his desire to grow a management team within the department will be a tremendous benefit to the City of Williamsburg and its residents. I am excited to see the Public Works and Utility Department’s future with his leadership as a guide.”

According to the announcement, Reed, a licensed Class 1 Virginia Waterworks operator and a member of the Director of Public Works and Utilities, started his government career as a waterworks operator with the Halifax County Service Authority. Previous experience includes serving as the Water Treatment Plant Manager for the Town of Smithfield and the James City County Service Authority, and as Utility Operations Manager for Prince George County, before returning to Smithfield as Director of Public Works and Utilities in January 2021.

In his current position, Reed also serves as the assistant town manager.

As the Director of Public Works and Utilities, Reed’s responsibilities will include directing the development and implementation of the department’s goals, objectives, initiatives, policies, and priorities; overseeing the coordination and execution of capital improvement projects with staff, municipal departments, and regional partners; assessing and monitoring the City’s infrastructure to provide adequate levels of public service; and serving on the City of Williamsburg’s leadership team, the city said.

“I am humbled and honored to serve as the next Director of Public Works and Utilities for the City of Williamsburg,” Reed said. “I look forward to joining a talented team of professionals who are dedicated to excellent public service, and I am committed to leading the Public Works and Utilities Department to always achieve excellence.”
