JAMES CITY COUNTY — A woman has died after a single-vehicle accident Sunday on Old Stage Road in James City County.
According to James City County Police, the department responded to the accident near the intersection of Fieldstone Parkway at approximately 4:10 p.m. A 2021 Lincoln Navigator was traveling eastbound on Old Stage Road when it exited the roadway and crashed, police said. Witness accounts said the vehicle stopped unexpectedly before abruptly accelerating off the roadway into an embankment. The vehicle then overturned, eventually returning to the roadway.
During the crash, an unrestrained passenger was ejected from the vehicle. The passenger, 71-year-old Nancy Roach, of Weems, was declared dead at the scene by James City County Medics. The driver, found in critical condition, was flown by LifeEvac to VCU Medical Center, police said.
At this time, it is unknown why the vehicle stopped and then exited the roadway, and the accident remains under investigation. Police said a medical emergency may have been a factor.
The eastbound lanes of Old Stage Road were closed for approximately five hours.
