JAMES CITY COUNTY — James City County recently announced it has received the National Association of Counties (NACo) 2023 Achievement Award for Best in Category for Planning.
The NACo Achievement Awards honor “innovative, effective county government programs that strengthen services for residents,” it said.
Ruth Larson and County Administrator Scott Stevens accepted the award on July 23 at NACo’s annual conference in Travis County, Texas.
“We know that the work our staff does every day is exceptional, but receipt of this national award confirms that they are some of the best,” said Ruth Larson, Board of Supervisors representative for the Berkeley District. “It was an honor to be recognized in front of our peers from counties across the country.”
The county said it was selected for the award based on the work involved in the update and implementation of its most recent comprehensive plan, which included citizen input linked to computer modeling to explore alternative visions for growth in the county.
The results helped residents and the Board of Supervisors make policy choices in the adopted plan, with the county adding momentum from an engaged public and the adoption of the plan “served as the catalyst for several significant implementation projects that reflected the vision of the community.”
