HISTORIC TRIANGLE — Aug. 6-12 marks the 24th celebration of National Farmers Market Week, which highlights the vital role farmers markets play in our nation’s food system.
Virginia Farmers Markets are focusing on “highlighting how access to fresh, nutritious food has expanded thanks to the Farm Market Fresh program, Virginia Fresh Match and SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) at markets.”
The local community has several markets to choose from and all are free to the public:
Williamsburg Farmers Market, located in Downtown Williamsburg on Duke of Gloucester Street, is open every Saturday until the end of October. Its mission is to sustain, foster, and operate a weekly farmers market in Merchants Square for growers and producers to sell fresh seasonal food and farm products direct to consumers in the Williamsburg area. Open 8 a.m. until noon.
Yorktown Market Days is an award-winning market that features family-owned and operated farms selling their products at Riverwalk Landing on Saturdays during the summer. Items from these farms go through just two hands — the farmer and customer — before reaching the plate.
Toano Open Air Market, on The Village Green at 7891 Richmond Road in Toano, is open every Saturday, weather permitting, between 9 a.m. and 1. p.m.
KelRae Farms run a market selling local produce grown right on the farm, and is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. and on Saturdays between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.
