Gloucester Teen Dies in York River Jet Ski Accident

GLOUCESTER — Virginia Marine Police are investigating a boating accident on the York River on Sunday that claimed the life of a 16-year-old Gloucester resident.

According to police, officers responded to Gloucester Point Boat Ramp in response to a collision between a Jet Ski and a pontoon boat off of Machicomoco State Park in Gloucester County at approximately 3 p.m. on July 30. The jet ski was being operated by the 16-year-old and the pontoon boat by his stepfather.

The teen was recovered from the water by the occupants of the pontoon boat and brought to the boat ramp where Gloucester County Volunteer Fire and Rescue provided rescue services. He was declared dead at the scene.

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the collision and no charges are pending.

The accident remains under investigation and more information will be released once the investigation has been completed.

Virginia Marine Police were assisted by the Gloucester County Sheriff’s Office, the Department of Wildlife Resources, and the U.S. Coast Guard.
