Magic A La Carte is a Bewitching Dinner Show Experience

WILLIAMSBURG — Abracadabra! Magic A La Carte takes dinner and a show to a whole new level.
Henry Aldrich, a local magician who goes by the stage name The Amazing Mr. A, said the local dinner theater-style show began when his friend and fellow magician, Steve Mains, saw a show called “A Taste of Magic” in New York. The show was so enjoyable, Mains shared the concept.

Aldrich knew the idea for a similar dinner and magic show, which did not exist locally, could be a hit. After contacting the original creator, the group received some tips for success along with a blessing to use the concept. “A month later, Magic A La Carte was born!” said Aldrich.
The first show was presented at the Jefferson Restaurant in September 2022.
“It was a smash hit!” exclaimed Aldrich, “That show sold out and we realized we had a hot ticket!”
Since then Aldrich, with business partner Mains, have spent a great deal of time scooping out potential locations to accommodate the specialty event. They have booked several sold-out shows within Williamsburg.
Magic A La Carte includes dinner and a family-friendly show. Guests are treated to up-close table magic before their meal as well as a floor show performed by the top seven professional magicians in Virginia. After every show, guests are asked to leave feedback. Aldrich is proud that every area of the experience (food, service, show and performers) has, to date, received the highest rating possible.

“Henry’s experience has been invaluable in making our show fun and entertaining. He personally works with each magician to make our acts better and works with the restaurants to ensure their menu and room layout complement the show,” said Mains.
“It’s a classic story of a kid in New York City going to the public library and finding my first magic book. That was the spark,” said Aldrich, who after retiring from the Air Force, began performing and opened a magical supply store in Newport News which he ran for 20 years.
Aldrich, now 85 years old, took a hiatus from magic to deal with personal tragedy before deciding he needed to “get back on the horse again and start riding. That is when Magic A La Carte came along.”

“This show is a family-oriented show,” explains Aldrich. “It is just a good clean show with a nice dinner that you chose at a locally owned restaurant that you probably already enjoy so, what could you lose by coming out?”
The next Magic A La Carte will take place at Center Street Grille on Friday, Aug. 25. Tickets can be purchased through EventBrite.
