Get Outside and Enjoy National Kids to Parks Day

(York River State Park)

YORK COUNTY — Virginia State Parks will feature kid-friendly programming in celebration of National Kids to Parks Day on Saturday, May 20, to encourage kids to discover science, history, nature and adventure by exploring the outdoors.

York River State Park is asking kids to get out into the great outdoors and discover the creatures that make their homes in and around the brackish water marshes. Begin the adventure with a Stream to Sea Stroll at 10 a.m. and visit four ecosystems in the York River watershed.
Fish and other aquatic creatures are on display for What’s in the Water from 1-3 p.m. and the aquariums in the Visitor Center can be viewed throughout the day.

Virginia State Parks programs include a variety of activities, including fishing, archery, hiking, paddling, scavenger hunts, and arts and crafts. Events vary by park location, and each event focuses on the natural and cultural features of the park.

“We are glad to partner with the National Parks Trust to connect our commonwealth’s kids and families with our 41 parks,” said Dr. Melissa Baker, director of Virginia State Parks. “We always want to promote discovery and exploration in the great outdoors.”

full list of programs by each park is available to assist in planning outdoor adventures for Kids to Parks Day.
