WILLIAMSBURG — William & Mary head men’s basketball coach Dane Fischer announced the addition of 6-4 graduate transfer guard Sean Houpt (Danville, Ill./Danville/Bradley/Florida Tech) to the Tribe program for the 2023-24 season. Houpt will enroll in a graduate program at the prestigious Raymond A. Mason School of Business.
“We are extremely excited to welcome Sean to the Tribe Basketball family,” Fischer said. “Sean joins us after a very successful career at Florida Tech where he was an all-conference player. He is a high-level shooter who can handle the ball and create a shot for himself or his teammates. Sean will bring an outstanding work ethic and toughness to our program and will be an excellent fit within our campus community.”
After starting his collegiate career at Bradley University in the Missouri Valley Conference, Houpt thrived at Division II Florida Tech, which competes in the same conference as former Tribe graduate transfer Brandon Carroll (Florida Southern). Houpt scored 1,000 points in just 62 career games with the Panthers. He also tallied 175 made 3-pointers (2.82 per game) and shot 35.6% from 3 and 84% at the free throw line.
As a senior in 2022-23, Houpt averaged 21 points, four rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.4 steals per game in leading Florida Tech to a 19-11 record. He earned D2CCA All-South Region Second Team and All-Sunshine State Conference Second Team honors for his efforts. Houpt shot 35.7% from 3 (91-of-255) and 86.1% from the free throw line (136-of-158). He ranked second in the Sunshine State Conference in scoring and 3-pointers made and fourth in 3-point % and free throw %.
Houpt came up with the biggest game of his Panther career in the SSC Semifinals against eventual Division II National Champion Nova Southeastern. He erupted for a career-high 36 points and hit eight 3-pointers in helping Florida Tech push the game to overtime before falling to the tournament’s top seed. It was one of four games of 30 or more points for Houpt on the season.
Houpt averaged 14.2 points per game and shot 37.8% from 3-point range as a junior at Florida Tech, ranking among the league leaders in 3-pointers made, 3-point % and free throw %. He was an All-SSC Newcomer Team selection in 2021 after averaging 11.9 points per game in his first season with the Panthers.
An excellent student at Florida Tech, Houpt graduated in the fall of 2022 with a degree in Sport Management and worked toward his MBA during the spring. Houpt was selected to the Florida Tech Athletic Director’s Honor Roll during his time in Melbourne, Fla., and was named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team this season.
