Driver Dies After Crashing Into School Bus in York County, Passengers Unhurt

(Virginia State Police)

YORK COUNTY — Virginia State Police are investigating a two-vehicle crash involving a school bus that resulted in a fatality in the early morning hours Sunday on Interstate 64 in York County.

The initial investigation took place at approximately 1:48 a.m., according to Virginia State Police. The accident took place on Interstate 64, east of Route 199, and involved a Hampton City school bus with 20 students and two adults — a teacher and the driver — on board. No students or adults on the bus were injured in the crash.
Virginia State Police said its preliminary investigation revealed that the driver of a 2022 Chrysler Pacifica, Austin D. Hermann, was traveling eastbound on Interstate 64 when he drove into the rear of the school bus.
Herman died upon impact. His passenger, 20-year-old Collin Hermann, suffered injuries and was transported from the scene.
An investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing, but speed was not a contributing factor, according to police.
The eastbound lanes of Interstate 64 were shut down to investigate the incident from the time of the crash until 7:38 a.m., with VDOT establishing detours for eastbound traffic, police said.
