Furry Friends Feature: Pet-friendly Events to Kick off Autumn’s Arrival

Greater Williamsburg loves its pets and to help welcome in the autumn season, The Heritage Humane Society announces its line-up of memory-making events for pets, adoptable pets and pet lovers, alike. There is even an adults-only and a kids-only event. Mark your calendar with this series of fall fun!

Drool in the Pool

Coming up Sun., Sept. 17 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., dogs get to have all the splish splashing fun. Held in partnership with James City County Parks & Recreation, well-behaved are welcome to close out the pool season at the Chickahominy Riverfront Park Pool. They can swim or be spectators. A $10 donation per dog is requested and Drool in the Pool reservations are available online or at the event. Muddy Marley’s Dog Wash will also be there providing pups with a shampoo, rinse, and towel dry for another donation of $10. For an additional $5, the dog will also receive a nail trim. All proceeds are also being donated to the homeless pets at the shelter. Cool Concessions food truck will be at Drool in the Pool selling summer favorites including hot dogs, chips, cotton candy and snow cones.

Kitten Yoga

Purr-fect your cat pose with a cadre of kitten cuties at Kitten Yoga. Come to The Heritage Humane Society Sat., Sept. 23 from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. for a beginner-friendly, gentle yoga session with Cameron Green. This is available to yogis of all levels and modifications will be offered to meet the needs of all personal practices. Attendees should bring their mats and be ready to breathe, move and enjoy the sweetness of adorable, adoptable kittens. Children and adults are welcome for a donation of $20 per person. Pre-registration for Kitten Yoga is required.

Paws in the Air

Paws in the Air is an inaugural event happening Sept. 30, 2023 from 2 to 5 p.m. Held at Legacy Hall in New Town Williamsburg, this adults-only event (21 and older) will feature locally crafted beverages including Virginia Beer Company’s new McDuff Cream Ale, food, music and more. While The Heritage Humane Society will be bringing adoptable dogs for meet and greets, non-shelter pets are not permitted at this event venue. Proceeds from Paws in the Air benefit The McDuff Endowment Fund that is a restricted fund that provides a safety net for the medical needs of homeless pets at The Heritage Humane Society. By making a gift to the McDuff Fund, donors ensure that the lifesaving mission of Greater Williamsburg’s largest shelter continues for many years to come. Paws in the Air online registration is open.

Paws for Applause

On Sat., Oct. 7 from 2:30 to 7 p.m., grab a seat at Alewerks for Paws for Applause featuring a lineup of local bands – Bad Habit, Marsh Hawk and The New Trio. Enjoy an early fall afternoon with seasonal and year-round craft beer, cooler weather and sounds of local artists. Alewerks is kindly donating 10% of sales during the concert to help the homeless pets at The Heritage Humane Society. Dogs are welcomed at Alewerks.

Halloween Kids Movie Night

While parents can enjoy the adults-only Paws in the Air, it’s the children’s turn to enjoy Halloween Kids Movie Night. Parents can drop off their children ages 8 to 12 for this kids-only spooktacular event. They will enjoy the movie Monsters, Inc., a pet-themed educational activity, popcorn and pizza. They’ll also meet some of the shelter’s adoptable pets. For just $20 per child, parents can enjoy an evening out while their children enjoy a Halloween-themed evening at The Heritage Humane Society. Spots are limited, so sign up online.

This week’s adoptable pet spotlight is…

Pretzel at Williamsburg Kia for Furry Friends Friday

Pretzel! You know how calm and relaxed you feel after going to yoga or getting a massage? That’s how it feels to hang out with Pretzel. She exudes calmness. Pretzel is a nine-year-old labrador retriever mix. She was surrendered when her owners went into assisted living and could no longer take care of her. The staff and volunteers at Heritage Humane Society just love her. She is so mellow and easy-going, truly the ultimate low-maintenance dog. Pretzel enjoys attention and is just as happy relaxing next to you and snoozing. She’s got “sit”, “paw”, and “lay down” down pat, is good with kids, housetrained and crate-trained. And the kind people at Williamsburg Kia have sponsored Pretzel’s adoption fee because she was featured on #FurryFriendsFriday.

The Heritage Humane Society has over 230 dogs, cats and small pets currently in their care. Adoptable pets are available to meet during The Heritage Humane Society’s visiting and adopting hours from 12 to 4:30 p.m., Tues. through Sun.
