As a veterinarian who got her start in 1995 doing house calls, Dr. Pamela Dumont got to know Williamsburg like the back of her hand.
With Godspeed Mobile Vet Care, she learned that being in people’s homes was invaluable because seeing where the animal lived, and what could realistically be recommended in terms of care, could help determine an individual medical plan.
When a local veterinarian was looking to sell his practice in 2001, Dumont decided to purchase it and established Godspeed Animal Care to expand the care she provided to local animals.
Seventeen years later, while corporations are buying up local veterinarian practices and putting their cookie cutter stamp on them, Dr. Dumont and her staff stand out by keeping their old school family approach to animal care.
Part of setting her practice apart from corporate veterinary facilities is being accredited by the American Animal Hospital Association, noteworthy because only 12 to 15% of hospitals in the U.S. and Canada are accredited. This entails being evaluated on over 900 standards including anesthetic monitoring, equipment sterilization methods and pain management protocols. During a medical procedure at an accredited facility like Godspeed, one technician does the procedure while another monitors vital signs, rather than having one person perform both functions as is commonplace at an unaccredited vet hospital.
For Dr. Dumont and her staff, it’s all about making sure your pets receive premium care. “We do things the way we’d want them done on our own pets,” says Dumont, the parent of a Labrador and five cats. “I want the very best for my children, so I want the very best for my pets.”
And that first-class care extends to all the services offered at Godspeed Animal Care and St. Francis Pet Resort. Inside the quaint red building on Tewning Road in Williamsburg, you’ll not only find a state-of-the-art-animal medical center, but also luxury pet boarding facilities, a grooming and spa salon, doggie playcare and rehabilitation services.
At the St. Francis doggie daycare, dogs are grouped by temperament and weight while being supervised constantly. “Dogs have fun in groups, but you need someone experienced to evaluate them and decide where they belong,” explains Dr. Dumont. Her staff is full of people qualified to evaluate each dog’s nature.
Doggie daycare is excellent socialization for younger pups and a means of keeping senior dogs mentally stimulated. Even if the older ones don’t want to play, being with other animals provides companionship for them.
When pet parents are away, St. Francis offers luxury boarding suites, each one differently themed, with ceiling fans, TVs and private courtyards for exercise. The dogs are taken out five times a day and an attendant is on site 24/7, but clients can also schedule outdoor adventures, an island toss, and cabana cuddles during their pet’s vacation.
Raintree condominiums offer feline guests over 6’ of vertical space which includes individual ventilation and offers a multi-tier living experience. As part of their retreat, each cat enjoys a 20 minute play session with the caring team.
And you don’t have to go away for your pets to enjoy a little pampering at St. Francis Pet Resort. With two professional groomers on staff, grooming can be scheduled 7 days a week, offering anything from nail trims and basic baths to breed-specific show cuts.
While her practice has added all these great services, Dr. Dumont and her staff have continued their mission to offer the best care possible to the pets of Williamsburg. That’s why they still make house calls Monday through Friday, offering wellness exams, outpatient and non-surgical procedures including blood work, from their mobile vehicle. And just like 1995, the fee for a house call is the same whether the vet sees one animal or several.
For those who prefer to come into the facility, the staff is happy to give a tour of the hospital as well as St. Francis Pet Resort. Having everything under one roof allows for an unparalleled continuity of care for your furry, scaled and feathered family members.
