With the end of flu season, a restriction requiring everyone to wear a  white face masks at the doctor’s office has now been lifted, according to health officials.

The release sent out Thursday by Hampton Roads area hospitals and healthcare systems says patients and visitors coming to local hospitals and health centers may enter without the protective masks.

The masking recommendation had been in place since Jan. 5, which was the peak of flu season.

Health officials earlier this year released strong recommendations urging people visiting local hospitals and health centers to wear masks to prevent contracting and spreading the influenza virus.

Citing the vaccine as the best defense, health officials say putting on a mask provides an added layer of protection against the flu.

The Virginia State Department of Health monitors weekly flu activity between October and May.
