A York Boys & Girls club member recently received a $1,500 scholarship from the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Virginia Peninsula.
Faith Dancy, a senior at York High School, was one of five recipients of the Dale Lucado “Typhoon Boy” Spirit Scholarship this year, which is awarded to high school sophmores, juniors or seniors planning to attend college who have displayed “courage to overcome obstacles and a love for life,” according to a recent news release from the Virginia Boys & Girls Clubs.
Each student received $1,500 to be used toward their college educations and was honored at the 28th annual Steak ‘N Burger Dinner on March 24.
Dancy has plans to attend a two-year community college next year and then transfer to either William & Mary or Christopher Newport University. She hopes to study theater or music.
Dancy was joined by Jazoar Tubman of the Tyler Avenue Boys & Girls Club, Marcquel Lamarr Bryant, Jr., and Malaysia Woods of the Peninsula Boys & Girls Club, Jeremy Allen Simmons of the Gloucester Boys & Girls Club in receiving this year’s scholarships.
The scholarship was created in honor of Dale Lucado, a member of the Boys Club with a passion for sports.
Lucado co-captained the 1967 Newport News High School football team, but when he returned for an alumni game between Newport News High and Hampton High in 1971, he sustained an injury that led to partial paralysis of his body.
Motivated to overcome his disability, Lucado was determined to remain active and involved in the world of athletics. He went on to work with special needs children, coach girls softball and participate in the Special Olympics.
The Friends of Dale Lucado Committee was formed to honor Lucado’s enduring spirit and encourage Boys & Girls Club members who display similar strength of character to attend college.
