Bacon Street Youth and Family Services held its inaugural gala and awards celebration last month and exceeding its fundraising goal for the event by more than $15,000.
“An Evening for Bacon Street” took place Feb. 21 in James River Ballroom at Kingsmill Resort. The gala included both a silent and live auction, and organizers hoped to bring in $20,000 between the two events.
In total, the auctions netted $35,224.82, which will go toward supporting Bacon Street’s mission of helping teens struggling with mental illness or substance abuse and their families.
More than 70 unique items donated by Bacon Street’s sponsors and community partners were up for grabs. Auctioneer Rick Overy, co-owner of the gala’s gold sponsor Compass Wealth Strategies, closed out the auction with a paddle raise that brought in more than $14,000.
In addition to the fundraising portion, part of the night was devoted to recognizing the work of both youth and adult members of the community who have been leaders in the community and dedicated advocates for the organization’s mission.
Three Historic Triangle high school students – Connor Hurley of Jamestown High School, Anna Fisher of York High School and Connor Grubbs of Jamestown High School – received a Youth Leadership Award for being substance-free role models and leaders.
Dr. Evelyn Arboleda received a Distinguished Service Award for her contributions to Bacon Street as the volunteer medical director.
Williamsburg-James City County Commonwealth Attorney Nate Green presided over the event as Master of Ceremonies.
