York County’s Board of Supervisors is putting out the call for students interested in speaking out for youth interests and concerns to serve on the York County Youth Commission next school year.

The program, which is open to York County students currently enrolled in eighth through 11th grades in public, private or home school settings, serves as “a link between the board and the county’s youth by representing youth related needs and issues,” according to a recent news release.

Members will have a variety of responsibilities, including conducting student surveys, making reports to the Board of Supervisors and School Board, conducting town hall meetings in each of the county high schools and engaging in community service.

Service on the Youth Commission allows students a chance to “build leadership skills through various team-building activities” as well as get an up-close look at the machinations of local government, according to the release.

A completed application form and a letter of recommendation must be received at the York County Parks, Recreation, and Tourism office by 5 p.m. March 9.

Application forms can be downloaded here or hard copies can be obtained at the Yorktown and Tabb Libraries, the Williamsburg and James City County Libraries, the Victory Family YMCA and at the PRT office located in the York County Operations Center.

After reviewing the applications, the Board of Supervisors will appoint up to three teens from each of the County’s five voting districts. The new Commission will be formally introduced at a Board of Supervisors’ meeting in June.
