February is a busy month for the Muscarelle Museum of Art with the opening of three new exhibitions.

“Hiroshige’s Tokaido,” “Light Works: A Century of Great Photography” and “Norman Rockwell and the Boy Scouts” are all opening Feb. 6 and will remain on display into August.

The new Tokaido exhibit explores one of Japan’s most traveled roads and features about 250 prints, including five distinct complete sets of Ando Hiroshige’s ‘The 53 Stations of the Tokaido Road.”

The show immerses the viewer in a panoramic view of this historic corridor and captures the artist’s love of the landscape of Japan, according to a recent news release. In addition to the famed Hoeido Tokaido set, the show also features four additional series: Sanoki Tokaido, Gyosho Tokaido, Tsutaya Tokaido and Upright Tokaido.

“Light Works: A Century of Great Photography” is a celebration of the past hundred years of photography and features a “breathtaking representation of the leading modern and contemporary photographers, including Alfred Stieglitz, Dorothea Lange, Ansel Adams, Berenice Abbott, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Diane Arbus, Richard Avedon and Cindy Sherman,” according to the release.

The show features more than 50 of the era’s most dynamic and influential images in a survey of the evolution of the art form during its first full century.

The final new exhibit, “Norman Rockwell and the Boy Scouts,” is on loan from the National Scouting Museum in Fort Worth, Texas and features nine paintings by Rockwell, who was celebrated for his nostalgic and patriotic depictions of 20th-century American life.

This show is dedicated to William & Mary Chancellor and former U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates, who became president of the Boy Scouts of America in May 2014. The exhibition is also a nod to the anniversary the Boy Scouts of American and William & Mary share – the college was chartered on Feb. 8 in 1693 and the Scouts was founded the same day in 1910.

The Muscarelle is thrilled to debut all three of these new exhibitions, and more information about each of them as well as museum admission can be found here.
