Interstate 64 eastbound was closed in James City County Saturday after a dump truck crashed into another vehicle and landed in a ditch at mile marker 247, Virginia State Police say.

At 2:49 p.m., a 2013 Volvo dump truck fully loaded with sand was heading eastbound on I-64 when the front tires blew, according to a news release.

While trying to get over to the closed shoulder, the truck hit another vehicle, then flipped over the guardrail and landed in a ditch.

The driver was not injured.

State police are investigating the accident, which led to major delays on I-64 eastbound.

Police said the road was likely to remain closed for an extended time period while the dump truck was removed from the ditch Saturday.

Speed did not play a role in the incident, police said. The Virginia Department of Transportation supplied alternate routes during clean up.
