A former employee at an auto and marine business in York County has been arrested for stealing and pawning  several outboard motors worth up to $6,500 over a six-month period in 2016, police said.

Brady F. Gibson of Newport News, 22, was charged on March 27 with grand larceny and embezzlement, according to Lt. Dennis Ivey, York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office.  He was transported to the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail upon arrest and released on his own recognizance.

On Jan. 3, the owner of Ned’s Auto & Marine on George Washington Highway reported several outboard motors were missing. The owner went to back room within the business and discovered the motors were gone from their boxes,  Ivey said.

Upon a routine investigation, police believe that Gibson allegedly stole as many as seven outboard motors sometime between July 1 and Dec. 23, 2016.

The investigation also revealed, Gibson also sold and pawned several of the motors, each worth about $922.  Most have since been recovered, Ivey said.

Gibson is scheduled to appear in York General District Court on May 31.
