Williamsburg - Deacon Calvin Taylor, Sr. answered the Master’s call and entered into the Gates of Heaven on Thursday, Aug. 13, 2009, in his home. His long and fruitful journey here on earth began on May 12, 1914, the son of the late Mattie and Zebedee Taylor, of a section formerly known as Magruder.

He was a lifelong resident of the area and a faithful, dedicated and supportive member of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church. He served his church as Chairman of the Deacon’s Board for over fifty years. He was a joy and inspiration to his family and friends. He touched the lives of all who knew him because he shared with everyone his love of God, words of spiritual encouragement and his caring and loving ways.

He was also preceded in death by his loving wife of sixty years, Bertha Taylor. He leaves to treasure his blessed memories his son, Calvin Taylor, Jr. and his wife, Janniver; sister-in-law, Suzanne Washington (William “Skip”); devoted caretaker, Bridgett Thompson; nieces and nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews; and a host of other loving relatives and many caring friends.

A funeral service celebrating the life he lived will be held 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2009, in Mt. Gilead Baptist Church with Bishop William M. Dawson officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Family and friends will assemble at 8735 Pocahontas Trail by 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Deacon Taylor may be viewed in the church from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Professional service entrusted to the staff of Whiting’s Funeral Home, 7005 Pocahontas Trail, Williamsburg, 757-229-3011.
