Community Notebook: Law Students Offer Help Restoring Voter Rights

community-notebook2Law students at The College of William and Mary’s School of Law are offering assistance to help ex-offenders restore their voting rights this month. The Senior Services Coalition has elected its leaders for 2012, and next month, Colonial Williamsburg will host jazz vocalist Jane Monheit. Read on for details.

Law Students Offer Voter Restoration Services

The W.C. Jefferson Chapter of the Black Law Students Association (BLSA) at the William and Mary School of Law will offer free assistance to community members seeking to have their voting rights restored or to groups conducting voter restoration outreach.

Since Gov. Bob McDonnell took office, a new process was implemented to increase voter restorations to ex-offenders.

BLSA students trained by specialists from the American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia are available to guide offenders through the restoration process. Ex-offenders can attend a restoration workshop at noon on Saturday at the William and Mary Law School or can reserve a time to speak by phone with a BLSA member.

To request assistance, contact Jonathan Peterson at japeterson01@email.wm.edu or send a letter with your name and number to: Black Law Students Association, William and Mary School of Law, P.O. Box 8795, Williamsburg, VA 23187.

Barbara Watson is in the picture of officers for Senior Coalition, but no mention of her in the article. Why not?
