Follow JCC with Tweets

James City County residents can now interact with local government via Twitter.

The county will use the social media site to share quick-hit news and information. Followers will be encouraged to send feedback to the county through the Web site. Because Twitter’s entries – called “tweets” – are limited to 140 characters, many of the county’s posts will include links to Web sites with more information. Tweets can also be sent to users’ phones as text messages, enabling James City County followers to get up-to-the-minute tweets in emergency situations. The county already provides emergency alert text messages and e-mails through its JCC Alert program, launched last month. The program is free and open to all residents. James City County also utilizes Facebook and YouTube to interact with residents. Its Facebook page features updates on everything from upcoming meetings to new employment opportunities. Its YouTube channel, features videos on varied topics, including winter preparedness, fitness and library updates.

Both Williamsburg and York County have embraced social networking as a means to communicate with residents. Williamsburg has a Facebook page, Twitter page and YouTube channel.

York County started a YouTube channel in January. At the time, spokesperson Christie Phillips said the county had no plans to expand its social networking presence onto Facebook and Twitter.
