Obits Writer
At WYDaily.com, we’re looking for a writer. And this is a job that requires a special touch. Not just the ability to gather facts, not just familiarity with AP Style – although we’re looking for that, too. But this job requires empathy. We’re looking for someone to write obituaries.
Some of the most interesting people who pass through this world do so with very little fanfare. The story you write about them might be the first story that has ever been written about them. You’ll need to establish good relations with funeral homes. You’ll need to be able to check facts. And most of all, you’ll need to have empathy and a sensitive touch because you’ll be talking to families and loved ones during a very difficult time. We’ll be counting on you to have and use all these skills so that these obituaries accurately and respectfully commemorate the lives of people who may never have been in the newspaper before – but certainly mattered to their friends, families and community.
This is a part-time position that will include our company’s two markets in Williamsburg, VA and Wilmington, NC, with the potential for more hours as we expand our reach into other markets. There is no travel involved.
Interested? Send us your resume, a brief note about why this position interests you and relevant experience that makes you right for the job. Also please include two published writing samples. Send this to us via email - jobs@wydaily.com.
