This weekend will be a scorcher, with highs in the triple digits, but that’s no reason to hole up inside sitting under a vent. Get out there and take advantage of the events that only come ’round this time of year.

Treat Your Fancy Girl
Dress your little ones in their best and enjoy a Fancy Nancy Luncheon from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Mrs. Claus Bakery & Café at the Yankee Candle Flagship in Williamsburg. The lunch includes a complimentary photo keepsake and costs $6 per person. For information about reservations, click here.

Protect Your Car From Theft

Residents can get their Vehicle Identification Number etched onto their vehicle windows for free from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in New Town. Etching the VIN number deters auto theft, according to the James City County Police Department; the process takes 10 minutes. Find out more information about the event here.

Mysterious Moonlight Canoe Trip
Beat the heat while still spending time in the great outdoors by enjoying a canoe ride during the full moon phase with a ranger guide at the York River State Park. The canoe shoves off at 7:30 p.m. Click here for reservation info.

Free Flick on the Street
Blue Talon Bistro offers free movies on Sunday evenings, right in the middle of Prince George Street. This week’s selection is “The Blind Side,” a sweet family film that won Sandra Bullock an Oscar. The movie starts at 8 p.m. Learn more here.

Sounds of Summer
Enjoy a variety of musical entertainment up and down the Peninsula. The Rat Pack will perform together again in “The Pack is Back,” a tribute to Frank, Dean and Sammy, to be performed at 6 and 8:30 p.m. on Saturday. Newport News native Christopher Spraggins plays Sammy Davis, Jr. Tickets are $30; for more information, click here.

Enjoy live music for the kiddies from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Bena Country Store in Hayes. Bill Crosby of Nashville, Tenn. will perform his Jimmy Buffet-esque tunes for the younger set in a free show. Click here for more details.

Farm fresh food for summer
Treat yourself to a bounty of farmstand goods this weekend, like tomatoes fresh off the vine and locally grown herbs. You’ve got your pick of farmers’ markets, starting on Thursdays from 5 to 8 p.m. at High Street.

On Saturday morning from 8 a.m. to noon, you can pick up fresh produce, flowers, meats and more at the Merchants Square Farmers Market. Click here to find out where to park and check the schedule.
