An estimated 17.6 million Americans were victims of identity theft in 2014, according data from the Department of Justice.

A good way to prevent identity theft is to shred personal documents which thieves use.

To help the public, James City County Police Department is hosting a Shred-A-Thon   from 9 a.m. to noon, March 25, at the Williamsburg/James City County Courthouse, 5201 Monticello Ave.

The first grocery bag of documents will be shredded at no charge. Each additional bag will be $5.

Proceeds will support the department’s annual “Shop with a Cop” event and other community outreach and crime prevention programs.

“Shop with a Cop” is a program assisting underprivileged children and families in James City County.
