Brenda Joyce Coverston Brinkley, 74, passed away Thursday, March 16, 2017.
Brenda was a native of Allegheny County, Va., which is near Covington, where she grew up. She moved to the Peninsula in 1965 and to Yorktown in 1980. She was a member of Grafton Christian Church, where she served as deacon and was the secretary for the church D.W. Executive Committee. She sang in the church choir for many years and was a prayer-chain contact.
She worked in a number of different jobs, including the old J.M Fields, where she was employed for 13 years. She loved the old country music and after Glen passed, she continued to sing with the ‘Over the Hill Gang’ at nursing homes. She loved NASCAR until Jeff Gordon retired, a tradition brought on by her daughter, Colleen, in the year 2000.
Brenda was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, Glen Edwin Brinkley; parents, Gevena Poore Snead and Edward Lawrence Snead; daughter, Colleen Yvonne Coverston; sons, William Gregory Coverston and Glen E. Brinkley II; and granddaughter, Morgan Brinkley.
She is survived by her daughter, Bonnie Brinkley Yacconi (Steve) of San Diego, Calif.; sons, Brian Brinkley (Kristen) of Boulder, Colo., and Jason Rankin of Wilson, N.C.; brother, Thomas E. Snead (Delores) of Virginia Beach; a number of nieces and nephews; sister-in-law, Jeannie Smoke of Malvern, Ark.; grandchildren, Steven Yacconi of Newport News, Destiny Yacconi of San Diego, Calif., Sophia Brinkley of Boulder, Colo., Samantha Coverston of Charlotte, N.C., and Hannah and Kenny Coverston of Yorktown; and great-granddaughter, Isabella Rankin, of Batavia, Ohio. Throughout the years, she helped raise some of these grandchildren by providing a loving home for them.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 21, at Grafton Christian Church with burial in the church cemetery. A viewing will be held one hour prior to the service. The family will receive friends following the service at a reception held at the church social hall and will receive friends other times at the residence.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Grafton Christian Church, 109 Brick Church Road, Grafton, Va. 23692.
