Bring out the party kegs! The Virginia Beer Company has been nationally ranked by BeerAdvocate as one of 34 top new brew makers.
Just in time for its one-year anniversary later this month, the Williamsburg-based brewery on Second Street joins 33 other new breweries, selected among 861 nationwide that opened in 2016, to receive this elite distinction.
The Virginia Beer Company was one of two in the state selected for this honor.
With 100 batches in 333 days and 57 unique beers crafted in 2016, co-founders Robby Willey and Chris Smith say it has been a tremendous year.
“To be recognized nationally for our business and our beers in our first year of operation is, well, overwhelming,” Willey said. “We came back to Williamsburg because of our connections to William & Mary and have worked hard to build a business that could contribute to the entire Williamsburg community.”
The company open its doors last March and features four flagship brands, which are available in 12 ounce can sizes. It continues to add new small batch recipes into its rigorous weekly production.
In total, eight beers and a weekly cask offering are regularly available to enjoy in the brewery’s 2000 square-foot taproom and 2000 square-foot outdoor beer garden.
“Beer is a work in progress,” says Johnathan Newman, the company’s brewmaster. “It’s an expression of ideas that are coming to fruition.”
Virginia Beer Company will celebrate its new award and first anniversary with a weekend party event March 24-26. The party will feature two new brews and the first large format bottles.
Live music will also take center stage during the anniversary weekend, include Good Shot Judy on Friday; an all-day music festival Saturday and a jazz brunch on Sunday. Food trucks round out the festivities.
