Sara Elizabeth Toy Zeman passed away suddenly Saturday, Feb. 25, 2017. Kind and free spirited, Sara brightened up everyone’s life that she touched.
She was born to Barbara Duckett (Virginia) and Richard Toy (Pennsylvania) March 17, 1994, in Clarion, Pa. Sara moved to New Kent, Va., when she was only two years old and attended New Kent schools from kindergarten through her graduation from New Kent High School in 2012. She was a member of the New Kent Middle School Beta Club and Band and New Kent High School Choir and she lettered in track.
Sara enlisted in the U.S. Air Force Aug. 13, 2013, and graduated from Basic Military Training shortly thereafter. She was then assigned to Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas, where she received the technical training needed to do her job as an aircraft armament systems apprentice. She graduated in February of 2014 and arrived at Moody Air Force Base, Ga., the same month.
While stationed at Moody, she quickly tackled the ranks, making senior airman below the zone, a feat limited to a select few, and then staff sergeant on her first attempt. Sara also deployed twice in her time at Moody. She first deployed in direct support of Operation Atlantic Resolve from Sept. 15 to March 16 and most recently to Nellis Air Force Base Nevada from June to December 2016, where she was hand selected to fill a shortfall for a fellow A-10 Squadron. She had been on countless temporary duty assignments throughout the country since she entered service. Sara was always a valuable member whether as a Weapons Team member or more recently as a Weapons Team chief.
As great of an airman that Sara was, she was an even better friend, known for being able to turn any situation into one filled with smiles and laughter, she made everyone around her better and they loved her for it.
She was a loving and devoted wife to her husband, Lucas; loving and caring daughter, sister, aunt, niece and granddaughter to her family. She was an avid animal enthusiast and aspired to one day be a veterinarian. Her animals were her children; four dogs, Jenna Bean, Petey Pablo, Stella Luna and Roman; two cats, Mr. Butt and Friskers.
Sara will truly be missed, as she was one of a kind. Sara is survived by her husband, Lucas Zeman; mother and stepfather, Barbara and David Duckett; father, Richard Toy; brother, William Morgan; sister, Jennifer Toy; nephew, Zachary Raymond; grandmothers, Rita M. Irby and Alma Q. Duckett; and numerous aunts and uncles located around the country. She is also survived by her mother-in-law, Christine Zeman; father-in-law, Todd Zeman; sister-in-law, Brynne Zeman; and brother-in-law, Zachary Zeman, and his wife, Missy.
She was preceded in death by her grandfathers, William H. Irby, John Toy and Roy J. Duckett; grandmother, Annabelle Wright; uncle, Joel T. Irby; and cousins, Scott Roach and David ‘Davy’ Redding.
A funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 4, at Seaford Baptist Church in Seaford. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral at the church. Interment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park, Hampton.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to New Kent Humane Society Inc.
