Five people have been detained in connection to shots fired near Stadium Drive in Williamsburg.

Williamsburg Police notified William & Mary Police around 1:40 a.m. Sunday morning about several shots being fired near Zable Stadium, according to an email sent to students by William & Mary Police.

Williamsburg Police said they heard a short burst of shots and were immediately able to detain the five people they believed were involved.

William & Mary Police also responded to the call, the email said.

The shots were fired into the air from a handgun, and there were no injuries or property damage from the incident, according to the email, which was signed by William & Mary Police Chief Deb Cheesebro.

Police said the people involved in the incident are not affiliated with William & Mary.

“There is no known motive beyond discharging the firearm in the air,” the email said.

All five people have been banned from William & Mary owned, leased or controlled property.

Police are still investigating the incident.

The college sent out a TribeAlert to students Sunday morning about the shots being fired on campus.
