Elwood Herman Bartlett, 76, of Yorktown, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2017, on the Caribbean island of St. Maarten.
Mr. and Mrs. Bartlett had been spending the month of January in St. Maarten for the past 14 years and made many close friends who have become family to them.
He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy as an armed service policeman and in the Seabees. He retired from the Virginia Department of Social Services in Newport News, Va., where he was a child support investigator.
Mr. Bartlett was born on June 4, 1940, in Galax, Va., to Herman and Plina Hampton Bartlett. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Richard Elwood Bartlett; and brother, C.L. Bartlett.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Louise Alderman Bartlett of Yorktown, Va.; daughter, Susan Bartlett Roberts of Galax, Va.; grandsons, Justin Blackburn of Annapolis, Md., Brandon Bartlett of Yorktown, Va., and Jackson Roberts of Galax Va.; brothers, Herman Bartlett, and his wife, Susan, of Radford, Va., and Thomas Bartlett, and his wife, Tammy, of Colonial Heights, Va.; father and mother-in-law, Roy T. and Ila Mae Dalton Alderman; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Richard and Joyce Alderman of Horner, W.Va.; sister-in-law, Diane Anderson of Bland, Va.; several nieces and nephews.
He loved his wife, children and grandchildren deeply and was so grateful for the time he spent with them. Mr. Bartlett never met a stranger and enjoyed talking to anyone. He had wonderful friends and neighbors who would congregate on his front porch. He loved the kids in the neighborhood and enjoyed listening to them talk about their accomplishments or anything going on in their lives. He treasured the friendship of his many friends.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, at Amory Funeral Home, Grafton.
