Edgar E. Barnes, 92, employed with the Amoco Oil Refinery for 30 years

Edgar E. Barnes, a former resident of Newport News and current resident of West Point, went home to be with the Lord on the morning of Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2017. He had just celebrated his 92nd birthday on the 2nd of this month with family surrounding him.

Mr. Barnes was a veteran of World War II, who served in the Pacific on the Ticonderoga and in the Marshall Islands. He was employed with the Amoco Oil Refinery in Yorktown, Va., from the date of its opening until his retirement, over 30 years later.

He lived his life by example and by the word of God.

Edgar was preceded in death by his parents, Bernie Sylvester and Rosa Lee Barnes; siblings, Charlie and Phyllis; daughter, Cheryle; first wife, Florence P. Barnes; and his second wife, Gloria V. Barnes.

Edgar is survived by his children, Glenda Gayle Pipkin, Frances (David) Hunt, Wes (Tina) Brinkley, Alan (Deanna) Brinkley, Daria (Paul) Morris and Page (Ben) Flanner; grandchildren, Sherri, Michele, Michael, Stephanie, Jeremiah, Kay, Megan, Chelsie, Rebecca, Benjamin, Jacob, Tara and Kristen; and great-grandchildren, Kyle, Devin, Travis, Cameron, Hailey, Lucas, Emmit, Jacob, Noah, Cullen, Gillian, Sophia and Abi.

Private services are to be held in Roanoke Rapids, N.C., at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests you honor Edgar by volunteering or donating to Autism Speaks or the American Cancer Society.
