HRA Swim Team Captures Second Place at TCIS Championship

hra swim teamNEWPORT NEWS –Hampton Roads Academy took home second place at the Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools Swimming Championship that was held Saturday at the Midtown Aquatic Center in Newport News. Junior Nicholas Schoenig was named the Boys Swimmer of the Meet, the girls team received the Sportsmanship Award and six-year head coach Jeff Scott captured his ninth Coach of the Year Award for the girls and boys teams.

Both boys and girls teams claimed the runner-up spot after a handful of successful performances totaling a combined score of 858 points. The girls finished the competition with 369 points and earned three individual victories in 200 Yard Freestyle (Bronwyn Keating, 1:56.28), 200 Yard Individual Medley (Melina Christou, 2:14.83) and 100 Yard Backstroke (Bronwyn Keating, 58.70). Christou, a freshman, and Keating, a junior, earned all-conference for their first place performances. Keating broke the school record for the 100 Yard Backstroke.

Falling short of first place by just one point, the boys clenched second with 489 points. Five Navigators earned all-conference awards from their first place performances in the individual contest. Michael Christou, Michael Keller, Cooper Muench and Lane Slate were first in the 200 Yard Medley Relay with a time of 1:43.25. Nicholas Schoenig captured the top spot for the 200 Yard Freestyle(1:48.87) and 100 Yard Backstroke(55.08). Other first place finishes included Christou for the 100 Yard Freestyle (49.37) and Muench for the 100 Yard Butterfly (57.73).

The team will head to Christiansburg on Thursday for the VISAA State Swimming and Diving Championships.
