A Williamsburg police officer felt threatened and fired a single shot when a Charles City man fled the scene of a traffic stop on Francis Street Saturday night, according to police.
Samuel James Byrnes, 18, allegedly fled the traffic stop in his vehicle around 7:35 p.m. Saturday, according to a Williamsburg police news release.
The traffic stop occurred between the intersections of Nassau Street and S. England Street due to a traffic violation, the release said.
As the vehicle fled, the officer felt threatened by the approaching vehicle and fired a single shot, the release said.
Police said Byrnes returned to the scene around 8:40 p.m. the same evening and turned himself in to officers investigating the incident.
Byrnes was arrested and charged with one felony count of evade and elude, one count of obstruction of justice, and one count of possession of marijuana, the release said. Byrnes was transported to the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail.
Maj. Greg Riley said in the news release the incident is being reviewed by the department.
