Jane Laws Smith, 76, experienced many successful professional endeavors

Jane Laws Smith passed away peacefully surrounded by family at her home in Newport News on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2017. She was 76.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, David L. Smith; children, Jennifer Smith Litterst of Washington, D.C., and David L. Smith of Downingtown, Pa., and their spouses, Michael Litterst and Carolyn Smith; grandchildren, Andrew Litterst, Jeffrey Litterst, Lauren Smith and Alison Smith; and niece, Ellen Rosenbaum of Goodyear, Ariz.

Mrs. Smith was a native of Ridley Park, Pa., and attended Millersville College. Her love of people, combined with her creative energy, led to many successful professional endeavors, including as owner and operator of a salon in Havertown, Pa., activities coordinator at Granite Farms Estates, an ACTS Retirement Community in Media, Pa., and professional florist.

After a brief retirement to St. Michaels, Md., she moved to the Peninsula in 1995, residing for 11 years in Kingsmill before moving to The Chesapeake in 2006, where she conducted floral design workshops, enjoyed fused glass and jewelry making classes, and was an avid reader and Bridge player. The family appreciates the wonderful care Jane received over the past few months at The Chesapeake.

A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, at Hidenwood Presbyterian Church, 414 Hiden Blvd., Newport News. A reception for family and friends will follow at The Chesapeake, 955 Harpersville Road, Newport News.
