The James City County Police department began an investigation Sunday following a fatal car crash on Route 199.
According to a county news release, police and fire units responded to a single-vehicle crash near the intersection Route 199 and Brookwood Drive just after 5 a.m Sunday.
Preliminary investigation revealed that a 1999 Dodge pickup truck was traveling westbound on Route 199 when it crossed the median. The vehicle then veered off the road and hit trees on the eastbound side of the road, causing the pickup to roll over on its roof, the release stated.
The driver, 27-year-old Michael Thomas Ott of Middlesex, was transported to Riverside Doctor’s Hospital and pronounced dead on arrival.
According to police, Ott was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and investigators believe alcohol to be a factor in the crash.
An investigation is ongoing.
