Shannon Bryant and Ryan Nice are to be married Sept. 9, 2017, in Mr. Nice’s parents’ backyard in Barhamsville, Va.

Shannon, 26, is employed as a receptionist. She graduated from Patrick Henry High School in 2009 and Hollins University in 2013.

She is a daughter of Marc and Renee Bryant of Montpelier, Va.

Ryan, 27, is a civil engineer. He graduated from new Kent High School in 2008 and Old Dominion University in 2014.

He is a son of Ray and Kathy Nice of Barhamsville, Va.

“I completely surprised my best friend when I proposed. I had bought a house in West Point and every weekend she would drive up and help me repair walls, yard work, and even put her money in and buy paint,” said Nice. He kept telling her how tight on money he was, so she came up with a “date-jar idea.”

Anytime they had any left over change, they would put it in a jar and wait for it to be enough to go on a date. They continued this money-saving technique for four months. By September, they had enough to go on another date.

She dressed up and drove from Richmond after work. The couple drove their normal route to Williamsburg. As they passed Gauthier Vineyards, Ryan kissed Shannon’s hand and whispered “happy date night.” Ryan had asked his neighbors, who owned the vineyard, if he could use their gazebo for a while to propose. Ryan’s sister, niece and mother went a few hours earlier to help decorate it with lights and food.

Ryan drove up through the vineyard to a lit gazebo. Shannon was standing under the lights while looking at the wine table still thinking it was just a date. He set his phone down and started recording. Ryan knelt down on his knee and asked her to be his wife. She fell to her knees laughing. She held him and said, “yes.”

Ryan had the ring since June, only one month after he bought the house for them to start their new lives in as a couple. Threw it all, she remained strong and positive, helping Ryan with anything he needed.
