Mary Mitchell Gotwald, of Williamsburg, passed away Saturday, Dec. 31, 2016. Born in Stokes County, N.C., on Sept. 12, 1918, the fourth of 11 children, to William and Mattie Mitchell, Mary developed a fierce work ethic, sense of responsibility to family and competitive spirit at an early age.
She was witty, playful, loved a creative challenge and an opportunity to serve others with a kind word or deed. Extremely artistically talented, Mary was recognized for her ability to create items of extraordinary craftsmanship. She also played a mean hand of Bridge well into her nineties.
Mary’s work ethic served her well during a professional career launched with World War II service as a supervisor at the Defense General Supply Center in Yorktown and concluding as an officer of Citizen’s Savings & Loan in Richmond, Va.
Her unquenchable sense of wonder and adventure was realized as she and Ed, her husband of almost 74 years, traveled extensively during retirement before settling in Williamsburg.
Mary was a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend. She is survived by her husband, Edward of Williamsburg Landing; daughters, Nancy Gotwald Harris, Jo Gotwald Hunter and Beverly Gotwald Serwitz; son-in-law, Paul Serwitz; and beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Should you desire, the family would be pleased for you to honor Mary by donating to a charity of your choice. A memorial service will be arranged at a later date.
