A man rescued from a fiery car wreck on News Road early New Year’s Day has died from his injuries, police say.

According to Stephanie Williams, spokesperson for the James City County Police Department, Antonio Salvador Samayoa-Bolanos died Sunday night from injuries sustained during the Sunday morning crash.

According to a county news release, James City County Fire and Police Departments responded to the early morning vehicle accident.

When units arrived, they found a single vehicle had struck a tree on News Road and was on fire, with the driver trapped in the car. While firefighters contained the blaze, the driver was pulled from the vehicle and paramedics began immediate medical care, the release stated.

Samayoa-Bolanos, 21, of Williamsburg, was transported via LifeEvac 3 helicopter to the Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center’s trauma and burn unit in Richmond, where he was listed as being in critical condition, the release stated.

He died later that day, Williams said.

While the cause of the crash is still under investigation, alcohol is believed to be a factor, police said.
