A 27-year-old man was arrested and charged with simple assault after getting into a fight with an acquaintance in the 100 block of Townley Court early Christmas morning, police said.

York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a report of a fight in progress at a residence around 1:25 a.m. Dec. 25, York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Dennis Ivey said.

When deputies arrived, they found Samuel Haywood, 27, outside a residence standing on a sidewalk, Ivey said.

Another man, a 57-year-old, came out of the residence agitated and told police Haywood had assaulted him, Ivey said.

According to reports from the men, they had been inside a residence, where they began an argument, which escalated to a verbally abusive situation and then a physical fight, Ivey said. Haywood allegedly shoved the older man onto a couch to gain control.

During the fight, the 57-year-old man said he struck Haywood with his walking cane in self-defense, Ivey said.

The victim said he did not want to press charges on Haywood, but police arrested him and charged him with simple assault due to the evidence, Ivey said.

Haywood is scheduled to appear in the York-Poquoson General District Court Jan. 4 at 8:30 a.m.
