Betty Jennings Ankenman, 92, was born Sept. 23, 1924, in Roxboro, N.C., and passed peacefully Dec. 25, 2016, in Newport News, Va.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Donald L. Ankenman and William R. Jennings; son, Jack V. Jennings; and grandson, James T. Jennings.
She began her career at Camp Butler, N.C., followed by the VA Hospital in Hampton, Va., and finished her career at the U.S. Post Office, retiring with 25 years of service. Additionally, she ran the Corner Market in Dare in the 1960’s.
She spent most of her life in York County, Va., and was a charter member of the Yorkminster Presbyterian Church, and the Women’s Auxiliary Post 824 Yorktown, Va. She loved gardening, playing cards and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her children; son, William Jennings, (wife, Jeanne Jennings); daughter, Helen Jones (husband, Ray Jones); daughter, Ann Walker (husband, Richard Walker); stepson, Bruce Ankenman (wife, Sue Ankenman). She was the proud Oma of 14 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; and beloved cousin of Wayne Rutledge (wife, Dianne Rutledge).
The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 29, at Amory Funeral Home, 410 Grafton Drive, Yorktown. A service will be held immediately following in the chapel. Burial will be at 1 p.m. in the Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, 5310 Milners Road, Suffolk.
