Dorothy Pope Burner, 91, passed away peacefully Thursday, Dec. 1, 2016, in Williamsburg, Va.

Dorothy was born on Nov. 20, 1925, in Goldsboro, N.C., to Arthur Pope and Ida Best Pope. On Oct. 8, 1943, she married Joseph G. Burner, who preceded her in death. Dorothy became a permanent resident of Williamsburg in 1947. Mrs. Burner was a member of Williamsburg United Methodist Church and taught the children’s Sunday school class.

Dorothy enjoyed reading, word puzzles, and needlework. However, most of all, she loved spending time with her family and friends in the backyard having picnics and making homemade ice cream.

Dorothy is survived by her son, Joe G. Burner of Williamsburg, VA; daughters, Darlene Beringo, and her husband, George, of Smithfield, Va., and Anne Thornton, and her husband, Lex, of Nokesville, Va.;  two grandchildren, and a great-grandson; loving niece, Danica Beringo, and her fiancĂ©, Scott Elmblad, of Stuttgart, Germany; and Stacey Rodman, and her husband, Jason, and their son, Joseph Rodman, of Smithfield, Va., and Joyce S. Hedgepeth of Williamsburg, Va.

The family would like to thank the staff of Greenfield Senior Living, At Home Care Hospice of Williamsburg, and her devoted friends for their help and loving care during this difficult time. A graveside service was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6, at Williamsburg Memorial Park.
