According to James City County police, an 18-year-old woman committed suicide at a playground Thanksgiving Day.

Police responded to the Westmoreland neighborhood playground on the evening of Nov. 24 and found the woman dead, James City County Police Department spokeswoman Stephanie Williams said.

The woman left a suicide note on her bed at a nearby group home and hung herself at the playground between 3:40 p.m. and 7:20 p.m., Williams said.

Williams could not confirm the name of the group home the woman lived in, but said it was located in the Westmoreland neighborhood.

The only group home in the Westmoreland neighborhood is Gateway Homes, an eight-resident living center for those being treated for mental illnesses.

Gateway Homes of Greater Richmond held an open house for the new living center on Sept. 23. The facility, located at 4933 Westmoreland Drive, opened at a later date.

Calls and an email to Gateway’s Executive and Clinical Director Lynda Hyatt were not immediately returned Monday afternoon.
