Mary J. Stewart was called to eternal rest on Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2016, in Riverside Doctor’s Hospital. Her life began on June 4, 1937, the daughter of the late Katherine and Harry Dillard.

Mary was a dedicated member of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church, serving her church on various ministries. She retired from the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Rufus Stewart; her sister, Margaret Franklin; and a brother, James A. Dillard. She leaves to cherish her blessed memories, her sons, James E. Dillard (Zilphy), of Amherst, Virginia, and Harry O’Neal Bartlett and Christopher Bartlett, both of Williamsburg; her two grandsons, Jamal Dillard and Jarrett Dillard; her two great-granddaughters, Jakiyah A. Dillard and Brea Young; and a host of nieces and nephews, other loving relatives and friends.

A homegoing service will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 29, in Mt. Gilead Baptist Church with Bishop William M. Dawson officiating. Family and friends will assemble at No. 16 Briarwood Avenue by noon on Tuesday. Mrs. Stewart may be viewed only in the church on Tuesday, beginning at 11 a.m. until the hour of her service. Interment will be at noon on Wednesday, Nov. 30, in Timothy Baptist Church Cemetery, Amherst, Virginia. Family and friends will gather at the gravesite by 11:45 a.m.
