VDOT will hold a public hearing Wednesday at Matoaka Elementary School for the proposed design changes to the intersection of Centerville Road and News Road in James City County.

The public hearing will run from 4 to 7 p.m. at the school, located at 4001 Brick Bat Road.

The proposed plans include construction of turn lanes, mountable curbs and the installation of a traffic signal at the intersection, according to a VDOT news release.

Earlier plans to construct a roundabout at the intersection were put on hold after VDOT received overwhelming public response questioning the necessity of the roundabout. Concerns were raised specifically about the use of eminent domain to acquire the land necessary to construct the roundabout.

Past presentations by VDOT had indicated that a roundabout would require fewer acres eased from landowners than an intersection with additional turn lanes.

In an email to WYDaily, VDOT spokesperson Brittany McBride Nichols said all plans to date will be presented at Wednesday’s meeting and will be subsequently available on the VDOT website.
