usc-va_-360x202Officials with the Peninsula Health District are searching for a large gray and white mixed dog that bit a person Sunday at the WISC Complex on Longhill Road in James City County.

According to a news release from the Virginia Department of Health, if this dog is not found, any bite victims will have to undergo post-exposure treatment for the prevention of rabies.

If found, the dog will not be taken away from its owner, only placed on an in-home confinement period of 10 days, the release stated.

The Department urges residents to report all exposures and make sure to vaccinate their pets in accordance with Virginia state law — which requires that dogs and cats be vaccinated between three and four months of age.

Anyone who has seen a dog that fits the above description is asked to contact the Peninsula Health District – Williamsburg Area Environmental Health Office at 757-603-4277 or James City County Animal Control at 757-253-1800.
