NEWPORT NEWS – On Friday, Sept. 30, 2016, Shirley Burnett Curtis Echoles was called to her Heavenly Home. Her life began on Nov. 17, 1936, in Newport News, the daughter of the late Alphonso and Blanche Curtis. She was the oldest of seven children. At an early age, she accepted Christ and joined Rising Sun Baptist Church.
Shirley was educated in the Washington, DC and Newport News Public Schools. In 1978, she graduated from Norfolk State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Special Education. She was employed by York County Schools for many years; retiring on July 9, 1998. She was a member of the Virginia Retired Teacher’s Association.
On Sept. 28, 1957, Shirley was united in Holy Matrimony with the late Arthur Echoles. Union this union, they were blessed with six children. Shirley touched the lives of many people in numerous ways. She was truly devoted to the welfare and happiness of her family. She was well respected in her community and was a proud, independent and strong person, who used her wisdom and strength to help others. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. We are so grateful for the years that God allowed us to spend with her.
She was also preceded in death by two of her children, Michael and Beth Echoles and two of her siblings, Alphonso Lee “Bubba” and John “Peter Ball”.
She leaves to cherish her blessed memories her son, Arthur Daryl Echoles; her daughters, Sharon LaPointe, La Wanda Echoles (John Mahoney), Bonnie Echoles-Barnett (Cornelius), and Robin Chester (James); her sisters, Jean Washington, Ethel Taylor and Patricia Curtis; her brother, Clifford Curtis (Rosa); her seven devoted grandchildren; her five great-grandchildren; a host of wonderful nieces and nephews; a host of other loving relatives; her very close friend, Evoria Green and many other loving friends.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 6, 2016, in Rising Sun Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Thomas officiating. Family and friends will assemble at 583 Taliaferro Road by 10 a.m. on Thursday. Interment will follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Echoles may be viewed from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., on Wednesday in Whiting’s Funeral Home, 7005 Pocahontas Trail.
