Leonard Sargeant III, 85, of Williamsburg, VA, formerly of Bluefield, VA, Charleston, WV, and Hilton Head, SC, died Saturday, Sept. 17, 2016, after a long illness. He will be remembered as a caring friend to many and a loving husband, father and grandfather.
Mr. Sargeant was born in Fairmont, WV, the son of Leonard and Fay Watson Sargeant. After his public schooling in Fairmont, he attended Mercersburg Academy and Lehigh University, both located in Pennsylvania. At Lehigh, he earned a B.S. degree in mining engineering, after which he served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Upon the completion of his military service, he was employed by Pocahontas Fuel Company as a mining engineer in the coalfields of southwestern Virginia and southern West Virginia. In 1961, he left Pocahontas Fuel to attend the Washington & Lee University School of Law in Lexington, VA, which he was able to do under the Korean Rehabilitation Program. He there earned an LL.B. degree and went to work as a corporate attorney with the Charleston Group Companies of The Columbia Gas System, Inc. He retired from Columbia Gas as senior attorney in 1986 but continued his career in private practice as a consultant in energy law. He was admitted to practice in the courts of Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia, as well as in various U.S. Circuit Courts of Appeal. He maintained his membership in the Virginia State Bar until his recent death.
Mr. Sargeant was a member of Bruton Parish Church in Williamsburg and a former member of the Church of The Good Shepherd in Charleston. As a volunteer, he served for thirteen years on the Board of Ocean Course Property Owners Association on Hilton Head Island, the last five years of which he held the position of president.
Survivors include his loving wife and caregiver, the former Alice Lee Carter, also of Fairmont; two children, Dinah Lee Sargeant Mason and Leonard Carter Sargeant, both residing in the Richmond area; two sisters, Barbara Sargeant and Jane Sargeant Hamilton; two grandsons, one granddaughter, and two nieces.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, Sept. 29, 2016 from 7-8:30 p.m. at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Road in Williamsburg. Services will be held in Bruton Parish Church at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 30, 2016. Burial will take place in the Bruton Parish churchyard following the services.
